Bake an air fryer Cake

Do you have any experience baking using an air fryer? If not, now give it a try. Thanks to the Cosori Air Fryer, I was able to complete it on my first try. As I previously mentioned, I attempted to bake both vanilla and fruit cakes in an air fryer for the first time, and the outcome was fantastic—the crumbs were fluffy, soft, and tender, just like in an oven cake. For your convenience, I am sharing my experience.

Why did I select an air fryer to bake a cake?

I am in love with my kitchen queen air fryer, either Ninja or Cosori. As air fryers make up quick lunches from frying and roasting to baking anything, air fryer cooking gives a lot of advantages over traditional ovens to working as well as housewife women, such as that it preheats quickly due to its small size, as compared to the oven in my kitchen. It saves energy by 50%. The air fryer stays cool while baking; hence, the kitchen’s temperature also remains normal, which is suitable, especially during the summer season.

How to Bake a Cake in an Air Fryer?

After going through and experiencing my air fryer bake cake recipe you will say definitely, wow what a quick and easy way to bake cake at home!

Kitchen tools:

  • Air fryer: take the air fryer of any size that you have in your kitchen
  • Cake pan: be careful while selecting it, it should follow the air fryer basket
  • Knife

Ingredients:

  • Sugar: I have used caster sugar; granular can also work but it requires longer mixing.
  • Butter: I have taken unsalted butter, as salt would be added according to need, and make sure butter is soft at room temperature before the start of the recipe
  • Eggs: Select any eggs that you can afford, I have chosen medium eggs in the UK
  • Flour: I have used self-raising flour also known as self-rising flour. If you have plain flour take 120g and add 1.5 teaspoon baking powder in it.
  • Milk: I have used semi-skimmed milk
  • Vanilla extract, or vanilla powder: Use a good quality vanilla
  • Salt: I will not miss seasoning my cake  as I have taken the unsalted butter

A step-by-step guide to baking cake in an air fryer

Step 1:

Preheat the air fryer to 160 degrees Celsius. I have chosen an 8-inch cake pan you can take any size which you want. My cake pan size is enough to make a cake for 12 people. Placed a parchment paper at the bottom of the pan.

Step 2;

I took a mixing bowl and mixed the measured flour and sugar in it, stirring to combine.

Step 3:

At that time I added the eggs, milk, salt, and butter to it. With the help of an electric hand beater, I mixed all the ingredients. Mixed them for a minute so that the batter becomes smooth.

Step 4:

Now place the cake pan into the air fryer basket pour this cake batter into it and level it. Baked the cake for 30 minutes at 160 degrees Celsius. After 30 minutes lower the temperature to 150 degrees Celsius and bake the cake again for 10 minutes.

Step 5:

It’s time to check the cake. For this purpose I have taken a toothpick and inserted it in the middle of the cake, it comes out clean, which means my cake is ready. If the toothpick of your cake comes wet, give it 5 minutes further for cook.

Step 6:

Wait is over! Now I have to take out the cake pan from the air fryer and give it 5 minutes to cool.  Now slice it in half, as I like to add buttercream frosting to make a layer in the middle. My cake is ready for serving.

Serve it with jams or berries or eat it as is; it gives a delicious flavour.

Tips to get a successful result!

  1. Selecting a cake pan for baking cake in an air fryer matters a lot. Always select a pan according to the basket of your air fryer. A lot of air fryers are not larger than 8 round pans. I am going to give you a tip here! Bake your cake in a smaller air fryer; the better the cake will be if you have a smaller air fryer because baking the cake thoroughly without burning its crust is a big challenge for an air fryer.
  1. Thoroughly check whether your air fryer has a baking cycle or not. If it is mentioned then follow it. As you will see, the temperature and time of baking are less than what you usually choose while baking in an oven. The reason here is that air fryers have an air convection mechanism that uses very low temperatures to perform any function.
  2. Prevent the cake’s top crust from burning, for this purpose, you have two choices; cover the top of the cake with aluminium foil at a time when you feel that top has reached that colour which you want, this will lead the centre of the cake to bake thoroughly, in the second trick you can use a head safe frying pan lid to cover the top of the cake when it’s colour reached to your desire colour.
  1. Do not overmix your batter. Beat until no streaks of flour are left. Over-mixing will result in a dense and chewy cake.
  2. Properly cool down the cake before icing or frosting in the middle
  3. Take all the ingredients at room temperature.
  4. Do not overlight the cake pan with batter, half filling is enough

How can I get that my cake is done?

Here are five tips that I follow while baking a perfect cake of any type in the air fryer, just to ensure the doneness of the cake.

  1.  The first and foremost sign that is noticeable is that the cake’s edges should gap between the cake and the pan; the gap should be small, between ⅛ and ¼.
  2. Secondly, while checking the gap in the cake’s pan, I also checked the smell of the cake. If it gives off a pleasant aroma of sugar and butter, it means the cake is done.
  3. Third: check the color of the cake. My vanilla cake has dark brown sides with a yellow-brown centre. After examining these three tips, it’s time to check the cake with a paring knife. It will clearly show the underbaked cake crumbs.
  4. Fourth: after removing the knife from the cake, press it gently with three fingers; if the cake springs back to its original texture, it means your cake is done.
  5. Fifth: the last tip is that I have checked the internal temperature of the cake with the help of a thermometer; if it reaches 200 degrees Fahrenheit, it means the cake is done. This temperature is for some traditional cakes such as chocolate cake, vanilla, pound cake, or butter cake.

What temperature is a cake baking at in an air fryer?

My air fryer setting comes with 150 degrees Celsius with 30 minutes, you can check your air fryer setting. I thought it was just a temperature indicator I always use it manually. You can adjust it to the size of the cake.

Which cake pan is best to use in the air fryer?

Any cake pan that you have in your kitchen, if it fits the size of the basket of your air fryer, will perform best for your recipe. So, never think of buying a special cake pan to bake a cake in the air fryer. The cake pan could be made of metal, glass, ceramic, or silicon.

Can I store the air fryer cake?

Yes! You can store the air fryer baked cake in an airtight container,  in the refrigerator for up to five days without frosting.
